When you’re behind the wheel of a car, it’s always important to drive safely and be aware of your surroundings. Safety is especially important in parking lots, where lots of vehicles are crowded into a small space also shared by pedestrians and shopping carts. Whether you’re parking your car in your own driveway, in a crowded lot, or alongside a curb, there are some steps you should take to maximize your safety.

DC Clear Auto Bra is your premier paint protection film dealer in DC and the surrounding areas. We’ll protect your paint job, but the rest is up to you. Here are four ways you can become a smart parker to keep your vehicle, yourself, and bystanders safe from harm.

1). Mind Your Speed

Once you identify the space where you want to park, slow down almost to a stop. You can allow the vehicle to pull itself forward without giving it any gas. Keep your foot over the brake so that you can come to a quick stop if needed. Line up your front wheel with the center of your chosen space and turn your wheel quickly in that direction to pull in.

By taking things slow, you can quickly stop your vehicle if someone walks in front of you, or if you notice that you’re close to hitting a vehicle in a neighboring spot. If this happens, slowly back out and straighten your wheels, then pull back into the space.

2). Look Around

Most parking lot collisions are caused by people driving in reverse without looking behind them to make sure the coast is clear. Because there are so many things going on in parking lots, it’s especially important to look in every direction while backing up. Don’t rely solely on a backup camera to tell you there’s nothing in your way. Many accidents could be avoided if drivers used backup cameras in addition to, rather than instead of, manually checking their surroundings.

3). Choose a Good Space

There are two major considerations when choosing where to park your car: protecting your car from damage and protecting it from thieves. If you park your car away from other vehicles, you will be less likely to get your doors dented by people who parked too close.

However, parking in a space that’s too remote can attract thieves to try and break into your vehicle. Look for a space that’s well-lit and near other cars without being surrounded by them. To protect your car from vehicle burglary, never leave money or valuable items in a visible spot inside the vehicle.

4). Safe Parking at Home

When parking in your driveway or on the street near your home, use the same safety strategies you would use in a parking lot. Residential neighborhoods where children play present even more challenges; watch out for running children, toys that suddenly roll into the street, wayward pets, and piles of leaves where children could be hiding.
